You’ve likely seen the news that the Banks-Vernonia State Trail is now a National Recreation Trail. Seemed like it was all over my feed for a couple weeks.

When I heard about the designation, the main question for me was, “So what will this change?” I scanned the internet, read every article I could find, sent an email to Friends of Stub Stewart….and got an answer from Michael Calhoun, who spearheaded the application.

Michael shares:

“One of the main benefits is these two trails will potentially be eligible for more grants to either repair or enhance the trails. It in no way changes how the trails are used. We are hoping to have a dedication ceremony this summer in Vernonia near Anderson Park. However the dedication signs are taking a long time to get here. Back up plan is next summer if they take too long. If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out.”

Thank you Michael for that answer, and for all the work you do for our trails!

  1. I LOVE your site and all your emails. I’m opening a private whiskey bar in the Historic River District this fall. I would like to invite you in for a drink on me. You guys do an amazing service to this community. Cheers,Randy Sanders Limerick Whiskey RoomBig River Taproom Tap Into Wine

    1. Thank you Randy for this awesome gesture! I had a fantastic Chicago-style “Treehugger” at your Taproom. The picture of those huge veggie wedges on a hot dog was so enticing that I had to stop by just for that, and it lived up to my hopes.
